Kinvig Geographical Society
The Society for Geography, Earth and Environmental Science students and enthusiasts at the University of Birmingham.
We are Kinvig, the student ran society for those in the school of GEES and those who have an interest in geography (Who wouldn’t?!) We run events and socials all throughout the year ranging from bar crawls and movie nights to formal balls and trips abroad. We also are here to help out with your wellbeing, careers, exams, uni life and even help you on your year abroad. Kinvig is a major part of being a uni student in the School of GEES at UoB, here to help out and most importantly here to have fun!
Why are we called Kinvig? After retiring in 1958, Professor Robert Henry Kinvig received the honour of the university geographical society being named after him. Professor Kinvig was a renowned geographer and played an integral role in the planning of rebuilding Birmingham after WWII. His area of interest was historical places, with a keen interest in places like Latin America, the Isle of Man and of course, the West Midlands. The department of GEES owes its founding to Prof Kinvig, who saw through its creation, bombing and reconstruction. We are proud as the geographical society at UoB to carry his name.
